The export of \u201cForest Bathing\u201d as a discipline with proven physiological effects on health led to the popularisation of its scientific approach, perhaps placing less emphasis on the mystical, philosophical and spiritual foundations underlying its practice. From our perspective, in the <em>International Institute of Nature Baths<\/em>, we wish to rediscover the connection with animistic, all-encompassing and interconnected Nature that the symbolism of the Japanese language brings us. Rediscovering and incorporating into a Nature Bath some of the significant \u201cconcepts\u201d or \u201cwords\u201d from this language can help us to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 <strong>Simplifying language<\/strong>. Many of these words evoke feelings and experiences for which we need several words in Spanish to capture and define the complexity of their meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 <strong>Tuning into the archetype<\/strong>It is rich in meaning, lending depth, presence and purpose to the experience. These words serve as \u201cconceptual bridges\u201d that invite us to experience the forest in a more sensitive, symbolic and mindful way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2013 Every word serves as <strong>emotional or spiritual compass<\/strong>&nbsp;for the experience. The person may repeat this phrase silently during and after the practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below are a few words that can serve as a THEME to help you set an intention or purpose for your Forest Bathing session, provide a FOCUS for an invitation and\/or HIGHLIGHT a particular aspect of nature that can act as a sensory anchor<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Amaoto<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Sound of Rain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The sound of rain<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It describes the sense of calm, nostalgia, introspection or contemplation that the sound of rain evokes in us, acting as a sensory anchor. In the context of nature, rain symbolises cleansing and purification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cFocus on Amaoto \u2013 the sensations you feel when you listen carefully to the sound of the rain\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"679\" src=\"http:\/\/umanagea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1-e1756983965789-1024x679.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/umanagea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1-e1756983965789-1024x679.png 1024w, https:\/\/umanagea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1-e1756983965789-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/umanagea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1-e1756983965789-768x509.png 768w, https:\/\/umanagea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1-e1756983965789-91x60.png 91w, https:\/\/umanagea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1-e1756983965789.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Boketto<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">spacing out<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Staring into space without thinking<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It describes the process of gazing at the horizon \u2013 an empty, unfocused, contemplative gaze \u2013 which allows the mind to drift freely, without judgement or goals. It is about achieving a state of passive presence known as \u201cfertile emptiness\u201d. It occurs spontaneously and naturally when we look out at the sea, the sky, the mountains, or whilst in the middle of a forest, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cIt takes just a few moments to practise Boketto. Choose a spot, close your eyes for a few moments and then open them slowly, letting your gaze wander. Don\u2019t look for anything or force anything. Every encounter, experience or moment is unique. It helps us to appreciate the present with mindfulness and gratitude, recognising that every moment is singular and unrepeatable. Their presence is sensed through the rustling of the leaves, the sounds of the forest or their shadow, and it is this presence that allows the tree to be regarded as sacred (<em>shinboku<\/em>). They instil in us a sense of reverence, respect and spiritual connection with trees, enabling us to recognise the forest as a sacred and living space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAs you walk, feel the Kodama of the trees through their subtle forms of expression, such as sound, light and presence. It allows us to appreciate the harmony and transience of life, inviting us to contemplate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cTake a few moments to appreciate the play of light created by the sun through the trees. How does it make you feel? It connects us with the idea of individuality, acceptance and appreciation of diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cConnect with the various living elements of Nature. Recognise their life cycle and how each tree, plant, shrub, etc. is at a different stage of maturity. It speaks of the interconnectedness and oneness of all elements of the cosmos, from the smallest to the largest. It helps us to feel the interdependence between human beings and nature, fostering a sense of belonging. We are part of the Cosmos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWalk whilst feeling the web of mutual connection with everything around you. It helps us to appreciate the authenticity of things as they are, willingly accepting what we label as broken, old, unattractive, and so on. For example, a dry, rotten log, a weathered rock, an asymmetrical leaf, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAs you walk, look for something that isn\u2019t \u201cperfect\u201d at first glance and discover its own wabi-sabi beauty.
